There are hundreds of conversion programs and Kindle “meatgrinders” that promise clean Kindle files, yet deliver a file full of gobbledygook. People were averse to using the search function before because, out of ignorance, they were afraid of losing their place. This guest post is written by publishing authority and two time best-selling author Kristen Eckstein.Īnyone who’s tried formatting their eBook themselves will tell you it’s no small feat. The best solution came way way before the page flip feature (including the original one) which is just search for what you want and then hit back to go back to where you were. ![]() Some of the menu options are nearly illegible, and the font text in ebooks show significant aliasing (not present in the Kindle 3 or 4).īut even on the 300 ppi readers I seriously question how useful it is to have screen previews 1 in or less in width. The current firmware was clearly designed for the 300 ppi readers and painfully forced onto the basic. The default of one page at a time works fine for the basic, but I know it won’t matter. On the Kindle basic this would be wasted because you can’t read anything on any of those 9 pages due to the lack of resolution. The only difference is that you couldn’t see 9 pages at once, you could only see 1 at once. So it won’t work with sideloaded ebooks right away, nor even with all ebooks sold in the Kindle store. As a ravenous reader and scholar, I savor the ease with which Page Flip allows me to keep thumbnails of maps and diagrams, my notes and highlighted passages, and bookmarked pages before me as I read, so that all I wish to see is accessible with the tap of a finger and my focus never has to leave the storytelling.”Īmazon is rolling Page Flip out to all its apps in the next few weeks, and it will be coming to the Paperwhite, 2014 basic Kindle, Voyage, and Oasis as a firmware update.įrom what Amazon is saying on its site, this is a feature of the Kindle ebook format, and not a software feature. “With Page Flip, books become vastly more accessible, navigable, interactive, and enthralling. “As an author, I love knowing that my work is presented with fluid clarity, freeing my readers from the page shuffling that can cloud and spoil the narrative,” said Laura Hillenbrand, best-selling author of Unbroken. ![]() The one on the left is for the old feature, while the button on the right is for Page Flip. Check it out in this GIF:Īs you can see in the GIF, the bottom menu bar has a scroll bar and two buttons for the two different flipping features. With Page Flip you can flip through nine thumbnails of page images at a time. ![]() Also, the Kindle ereader already let you push the page you’re reading to the background and flip around inside a book, but the new Page Flip feature improves upon that feature. Their original location will be saved, enabling them to quickly jump to the back of a book to check a map or glossary and then return to the story.Īs any Kindle user could tell you, the Kindle platform already had a feature like this where you could flip through a comic book. With Page Flip, readers can easily flip back and forth between pages in an ebook to reference different parts of the book while they read. On Tuesday Amazon introduced a new navigation feature for Kindle platform called Page Flip. The ability to hold your place with a forefinger or bookmark while quickly flipping around the pages of a book is one of the few functional advantages paper books have over ebooks – or rather, it was. View full post on Instagram Swift’s bringing back the squad, even just for a night, is a rare and major power move and signifies the continuation of her new single era. Swift did signal to fans last week at her Tampa show that she is doing okay, though, raising a thumbs up when she saw a fan's “You ok?” sign. Neither Swift nor Alwyn has offered any detailed comments themselves on the split-which is unsurprising, given they have always been private throughout their six-year romance. “She isn’t dating anybody and isn’t even thinking about getting into another relationship anytime soon.” “ adjusting to the single life,” the source added. That source clarified that no, Swift is not dating right now. She truly believes whatever is meant to be, will be, and knows everything happens for a reason.” On April 20, a source spoke to Us Weeklyabout Swift's current headspace, saying “Taylor is handling the breakup really well and she’s feeling very optimistic about her future. She hopes they can be friendly in the future.” “They had a deep connection and she really appreciated that. “Taylor has nothing but respect for Joe and really loved and enjoyed all the time and memories she shared with him,” the source added. They had been together for such a long time and were spending so much time together, but their personalities were just too different. “It was more of Taylor's decision to break up, but both of them realized that they weren't completely right for one another. “Taylor and Joe are in totally different places in their lives right now,” the source said. The last update a source gave with details about the breakup was to Entertainment Tonighton April 11, saying Swift ended the relationship and wishes Alwyn well. Swift and Alwyn's breakup has consistently been reported by multiple outlets to be amicable. Swift herself is by all indications-sources, outings, and her own reassurance to fans-doing well. Friday, April 21 Instagram Swift and Alwyn's breakup thus far has been reported to be amicable, although these new actions hint there could be drama behind the scenes. ![]() Gigi Hadid no longer following Joe Alwyn as of 1:45 P.M. When initially reported the mass Alwyn unfollowing on Thursday afternoon, Hadid was still following him at the time. (Lively doesn't follow Alwyn, and Swift doesn't follow anyone on Instagram, so she can't send a message by unfollowing her ex.) The outing last night came hours after fans noticed that some major people in Swift's life, including all three Haim sisters, Swift's brother, and Lively's husband Ryan Reynolds, had suddenly unfollowed Alwyn on Instagram. All of Swift's friends in her going-out group, including Gigi Hadid, have now unfollowed Alwyn on Instagram. You can see photos of Swift here and photos of Alwyn here on TMZ. It is also a far cry from how Alwyn appeared in his photographs, as he looked very sleep deprived at least. It's a 1989 throwback moment (and perhaps an Easter egg that the re-recorded album is coming soon) that doubles as a breakup power move. Everyone was impeccably dressed, but Swift in particular looked fabulous in a little black dress, red lip, wayfarer sunglasses, and loafers. On Thursday evening, Swift was photographed out with Lively, the Haims, and Hadid, arriving at members-only club Zero Bond in New York City. Swift was photographed looking incredible with friends Blake Lively, the Haim sisters (Alana, Este, and Danielle), and Gigi Hadid hours after photos of Alwyn in London surfaced. Here, a breakdown on all that's happened. Yesterday's moves change the split narrative a bit. Swift revived the squad, who has all now unfollowed Alwyn on Instagram, for a night out in New York City. But she did let her actions (and her own recent paparazzi-captured outing) send a message. ![]() After the images were published yesterday, Swift didn't address or respond to them on her social media. Joe Alwyn was photographed for the first time since his breakup from Taylor Swift in London Wednesday looking “forlorn,” per the photo agency. ![]() At Hellerman's suggestion, the group took its name from a play by Gerhart Hauptmann, Die Weber ( The Weavers 1892), a powerful work depicting the uprising of the Silesian weavers in 1844 which contains the lines, "I'll stand it no more, come what may".Īfter a period of being unable to find much paid work, they landed a steady and successful engagement at the Village Vanguard jazz club. The Weavers were formed in November 1948 by Hays, Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, and Fred Hellerman. The Almanac Singers disbanded after the U.S. The Almanacs supported the change and produced many pro-war songs urging the U.S. In June 1941, when Germany invaded the Soviet Union, the APM changed its name to the American People's Mobilization and followed the Party line by altering its focus to supporting U.S. The Almanacs featured many songs opposing entry into the war by the U.S. In 1940, Lee Hays and Pete Seeger co-founded the Almanac Singers, which – along with American folk songs and ballads – promoted peace and isolationism in the years preceding World War II, working with the Communist Party-backed American Peace Mobilization (APM). His tenor and banjo part was covered in succession by Erik Darling, Frank Hamilton and finally Bernie Krause until the group disbanded in 1964. 1 on popular music charts, their recording of Lead Belly's " Goodnight, Irene." Despite their popularity, the Weavers were blacklisted during much of the 1950s.ĭuring the Red Scare, members of the group were followed by the FBI and blacklisted, with Seeger and Hayes called in to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities The group sold millions of records at the height of their popularity, including the first folk song to reach No. Founded in 1948, the group sang traditional folk songs from around the world, as well as blues, gospel music, children's songs, labor songs, and American ballads. The Weavers were an American folk music quartet based in the Greenwich Village area of New York City originally consisting of Lee Hays, Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, and Fred Hellerman. Seeger and Guthrie's sense of tradition may be warm and inviting in a live setting, but mixing a little more of what made Guthrie's late-'70s work special with the folksier material would have made for a better recording.Greenwich Village, New York City, United States Included along with the Weavers hits "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" and "If I Had a Hammer" (co-written by Seeger and Hays) are a couple of wonderful Hays originals - the old union number "Raggedy, Raggedy" and the morbidly funny "In Dead Earnest," written shortly before his death. Still, it's Seeger's homage to his friend and fellow Weaver, Lee Hays, who had recently passed away, that is the album's true highlight. He's more successful with time-tested material such as the 1920s ragtime of "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone," as well as Blind Blake's "Run, Come See Jerusalem" and a trio of tunes by his father. On the other hand, tracks such as Guthrie's cover of Tom Paxton's "I'm Changing My Name to Chrysler" and especially "Neutron Bomb" have lost much of their initial charm with time. Listening to Pete Seeger is kind of like hearing a museum piece, which in his case is fine. And while Seeger's singalongs and Guthrie's raps can wear a bit thin after a while, there are some genuine moments of both energy and hominess that are quite nice. Seeger is his usual folksy self, leading the crowd through a series of folk tunes ranging from the traditional African chant "Wimoweh (Mbube)" to Harry Chapin's "Circles," while Guthrie mixes his warm counterculture storytelling with selections of old ragtime, gospel, and folk. Recorded in late summer of 1981, Precious Friend, the second of Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger's live collaborations, is pretty much what you would expect. |
